You may think that the title to this post is quite odd, but I beg you to continue reading. As I sat in my bedroom wondering what I would share with you today, I recalled the sermon that I recently heard. The subject revolved around a Bad King by the name of King Ahab and although you may or may not be one that recalls this story or one that believes in these particular stories..this is one that can apply to each and every one of us.
As humans we naturally have feelings of envy and may go as far as coveting something a person or friend may have whether we will admit it or not. Oh sure many of us, will try to hide the fact that we are envious of such pleasures but we are only fooling ourselves. One of the hardest commandments is the 10th one which mentions that we shall not covet our neighbor. This commandment is the hardest because no matter how much we try we can't seem to help ourselves.
Imagine walking down the street and seeing a beautiful car or someone walking down the street smiling and seemingly enjoying life or couples that look so much in love. How do you feel when you see those things or people? Are you envious? Do you wish you could have the same, whether it is a material object or simply the feelings of happiness and love?
You see what I mean? Although we may claim not to be envious and covet our neighbor we still do it and sometimes on a daily basis. Perhaps we try to kid our selves into thinking that we are happy for the couple or the friend who just received a promotion at work but are you truly happy?
There are 7 deadly sins and more if you try to break each of them down but 7 nonetheless. The one of envy which is at times synonymous with coveting is one of those sins. How is our heart involved in all of this you may ask? If you think about it, coveting deals with our hearts and seems to strike the deepest of all the deadly sins.
Some think that the other commandments may be easier to follow because they merely sound like instructions, but the 10th one focuses on our behavior and how we truly feel in our hearts. As our pastor described it beautifully I had to share it here with you...our hearts are very difficult to control just as its difficult to control rushing water or a storm in the sea. No matter how hard we try to stop it from happening it continues on; it is extremely difficult.
Our gift is that of this, the hardest commandment, which reminds us that we must work harder and harder to change our hearts. We all need new hearts and it is possible to obtain it with hard work on a daily basis. Next time you feel that urge of coveting or envy start to rise within you, consider the hard work that was involved. Especially the hard work that particular person may have had to endure to obtain what you covet so badly.
You may be surprised to learn that you too can have the same with some work and dedication but remember it all begins in the heart. Don't give up!
